And you thought Electro-Magnetism was dead, buried in the ground after so many months. But nay, she has been resurrected from the depths. Magic incantations and all, this time through the help of my (trusty?) laptop.
Yes indeed I have completely switched to laptop mixing, and oh how bad I am at it! I don’t find it particularly fun yet so I haven’t been practicing and I’m sad to say it shows. Hopefully the content will make up for it…

This month I am going to make the jump to laptop DJing, I swear. Though every month I say that. And every month it doesn’t happen. But hopefully this will be the last mix with CDs and such. I have so much awesome music on my laptop that at this rate will never make it onto these mixes unless I use software to access them. I am attempting to admit to myself that iTunes has completley taken over the way I access and browse music and that I need to embrace it or be eternally frustrated by how archaic browsing physical music has started to feel to me.
I don’t want this to be the case, but it just is.
So there are a bunch of bands I’ve been really loving lately that I just couldn’t play on this mix because they were trapped inside my laptop and couldn’t get out. And that is a crime.

Hello my beloved listeners where ever you may be. It’s been a minute here with the podcasts/mixes…Thanks for holding out! I have come through at last with a new little mix. It’s rather short, but I was running low on time so, well, there it is. I hope you enjoy it. I’ve had some awesome positive responses about the mixes and I really appreciate it! It makes me feel like someone is actually listening to them. And not only just listening to them, but enjoying them, hearing new things, old things, loved things. Thank you!

I’ve had a long break with the mixes- but this one will make up for it! Totally rockin dark-as-all-get-out proto-EBM tunes, plus a wonderful track off of the new Vinyl-On-Demand re-release from Experimental Product’s Prototype and Garage Tracks- which, by the way, you should snag as soon as possible because it is really a gem! I bought mine through Michael Gross of EP and he clarified the back cover photo for me (see above) and signed it. Sweet! It’s been on the turntable for about a solid 48 hours…Joy. You can pick up a copy for yourself through their Myspace page (save on shipping if you’re in the US!), Germany’s Vinyl-On-Demand or Anna Logue Records.
In addition to Experimental Products and proto-EBM, I’ve been scouring the web for all projects involving the man who calls himself Abberline or Francois Remigi of Toulouse France. He’s done a few different projects- namely defunct Opera (so good), current Remiggi 5000 and Abberline. With his lovely hot vocals I want them all! I included one track off the Rock Machine compilation from Remiggi 5000. Unfortunately very little is available from them but hopefully there will some sort of full release in the future. He also works with a man who calls himself Assisted.Brain.By.O., also from Toulouse, who does a minimal synth project of the same name, A.B.B.O., that I love right now. If I could get some not-shitty quality MP3’s I would play some…Another darker synth project of his, Le Moine, has a track on the new Enfant Terrible comp Radio Resistencia…
Speaking of hot french vocals, I also included a track (also off the Rock Machine comp) from Quebec’s Automelodi aka Xavier Paradis aka Arnaud Lazlaud. The man is talented! Everything he does is golden, I swear. And silky and highly danceable.
…….And! he’s going to be performing at NYC’s Wierd on April 8th next month at Home Sweet Home (at 131 Chrystie St.). Not to be missed!
There ends my spiel. Enjoy the mix!

The winter doldrums caught up with me this afternoon. I was doing fine until the sun started to set (though I didn’t even see it through the clouds but once all day). As the world became dark I suddenly just didn’t want to do anything ever again but hide under the covers and watch movies, or cry. Probably just cry.
What are doldrums?
The Doldrums (often capitalized when referring to the geographic region) is an area of the Atlantic Ocean, the Pacific Ocean and the Indian Ocean affected by the Intertropical Convergence Zone, a low-pressure area around the equator where the prevailing winds are calm.
This region is also noted for calm periods when the winds disappear altogether, or are light and shifting. Hurricanes originate in this region. Because of the unpredictable weather patterns, the Doldrums became notorious with sailors because this region’s periods of deadly calm could trap ships for days or weeks on end as they waited for enough wind to power their sails.
In colloquial usage, “being in the doldrums” refers to being in a state of listlessness, despondency, inactivity, stagnation, or a slump.
However, I was able to pull it together enough to make this mix. I included Solvent’s newest release- a remake of Lydia Lunch’s “Master Alchemist”. Quite twisted and nice. You can pick it up here. Check out Echoism Recordings on Myspace.
My other favorite is Arnaud Lazlaud’s “Le Malade Roi.” I swear I can listen to it again and again all day long. That song was released as a 7″ by Hertz-Schrittmacher, a sub-label of Kernkrach, last year and was produced by Xavier Paradis of Automelodi. It was originally made in the late nineties. You can get it through Annalogue Records or if you live in North America you can contact him directly to get a copy without shipping costs from Europe.
I discovered that ridiculously cute song “Master & Slave” by Puss recently. I just have this thing for self-referencing synthesizer music. I would like to do a show specifically made of synthesizer songs about synthesizers. Some day…
On with the mix! …

It was on this incredible compilation that a friend gave me that had no track listings. Over the years I’ve been figuring out all the tracks…its like a fun little game.

The saga continues! After surviving the holiday insanity I am back on schedule with another installment of Electro-Magnetism. This one is seriously all over the map. After delving into the old Snow Robots comps from Suction Records I recently discovered the album “The View From Your New Home” by The Mitgang Audio from 2003. Not sure why it took me so long. I also was just feeling in the mood for the epicness that is “Symphony Electrique”. Some days are just like that.
And I apologize for some sub-par sound quality on some tracks. I noticed right towards the end of the set that the treble had been cut (due to a magic button I didn’t know existed) on one of the channels on the mixer. Woops on that shit.
Dance in yer pants and enjoy!

There are so many great new things today that are simultaneously creepy yet wondrous and beautiful. One of them is that fact that it’s going to be almost 70 degrees here in NYC. The other is the band ADN’ Ckrystall whom I recently discovered. I had heard a few songs here and there but had never really sat down and listened to them at length. I just found the collection “Collected Works” and it has seriously blown my mind. I haven’t stopped listening to it in weeks.
I try to listen to other music, try to tear myself away, but I just keep coming back. I was at my parents’ house for the holidays trying to find excuses to sneak off and listen to it. I went to the mall, partially so I could get some art supplies, but also so I could rock out to it on my parents’ sweet car stereo.
ADN’ Ckrystall is French musician Erick Moncollin who has been creating really unique fantastical minimal electronic music since 1977.
“Collected Works” was produced in 2004 as a two disc set and has been out of print ever since as far as I can tell. According to Discogs only 100 copies were produced by MetaWaveClassix out of Germany, a sub-label of
MetaWaveMusic that specializes in re-releasing out-of-print minimal electronic and electronic avant garde music.
The albums included on the collection are the incredible Jazz Mad LP, In-Edit 7″, Museum EP and sessions, L’Appel du Vent tape, Rock Noire 10″, and studio outtakes.
Anna Logue Records just released the new ADN’ Ckrystall LP “Minilab” this past year.
The Jazz Mad album is available for download on the wonderful blogs Systems of Romance and Mutant Sounds.
