bleeps & bloops

Electro-Magnetism: Episode 11 (Spring and Solvent!)

Is it really here? After so many false starts? The trees say yes, but I’m pessimistic. It’ll never come! Ever!

Well it’s sunny out, though I haven’t felt it on my skin yet since I’ve been trollishly indoors all day. I am heading out in a minute after I post this. I swear.

My original intention with this mix was to incorporate a theme. I wanted to celebrate the fact that one of my all time favorite musicians, Solvent, is performing April 29th at Wierd at 131 Christie. What a treat! Based in Toronto, Solvent (aka Jason Amm) has been hugely influential on my tastes in music and my attempts to make my own. Its unique even within the realm of synthesizer pop and after exhausting all his material I struggled to find other bands similar enough to him to fulfill my analog bleep-filled desires. There really weren’t any others that quite hit the spot! What to do? I explored a little and discovered his label Suction Records which is now kaput but offered me Lowfish, his other project Black Turtleneck and the Snow Robots compilations (though most of the tracks I love on the comps are side projects of his).

Shortly thereafter I came across the music of Roger Semsroth, aka Skanfrom and now Sleeparchive. He was also the synth mastermind behind Bakterielle Infektion. His music in B.I. and Skanfrom, melancholy and dark synthetic pop sometimes verging on noise, has really grown on me as has his new minimal material. Lovely.

So my choices for this mix today all stem from my fascination in some way with the instrumental-meticulous-analog-synth-warm-yet-chilly music of Solvent. I think. Well, a lot of it does anyway. And some of it I just thought was pretty and threw in for good measure. Like “Who is Kip Jones?” by Experimental Products. I am totally obsessed right now! That song has become a daily ritual….

Enjoy!

Electro-Magnetism: Episode 7

synth2_detail1

The winter doldrums caught up with me this afternoon. I was doing fine until the sun started to set (though I didn’t even see it through the clouds but once all day). As the world became dark I suddenly just didn’t want to do anything ever again but hide under the covers and watch movies, or cry. Probably just cry.

What are doldrums?

The Doldrums (often capitalized when referring to the geographic region) is an area of the Atlantic Ocean, the Pacific Ocean and the Indian Ocean affected by the Intertropical Convergence Zone, a low-pressure area around the equator where the prevailing winds are calm.

This region is also noted for calm periods when the winds disappear altogether, or are light and shifting. Hurricanes originate in this region. Because of the unpredictable weather patterns, the Doldrums became notorious with sailors because this region’s periods of deadly calm could trap ships for days or weeks on end as they waited for enough wind to power their sails.

In colloquial usage, “being in the doldrums” refers to being in a state of listlessness, despondency, inactivity, stagnation, or a slump.

However, I was able to pull it together enough to make this mix. I included Solvent’s newest release- a remake of Lydia Lunch’s “Master Alchemist”. Quite twisted and nice. You can pick it up here. Check out Echoism Recordings on Myspace.

My other favorite is Arnaud Lazlaud’s “Le Malade Roi.” I swear I can listen to it again and again all day long. That song was released as a 7″ by Hertz-Schrittmacher, a sub-label of Kernkrach, last year and was produced by Xavier Paradis of Automelodi. It was originally made in the late nineties. You can get it through Annalogue Records or if you live in North America you can contact him directly to get a copy without shipping costs from Europe.

I discovered that ridiculously cute song “Master & Slave” by Puss recently. I just have this thing for self-referencing synthesizer music. I would like to do a show specifically made of synthesizer songs about synthesizers. Some day…

On with the mix! …

Lots of lovely crunchy drippy thumpy minimal house from our modern era, minimal electro-pop of today, and minimal synth from the early eighties… in this week’s rendition of Electro-Magnetism. Thanks for listening!
