Electro-Magnetism: Episode 7

synth2_detail1

The winter doldrums caught up with me this afternoon. I was doing fine until the sun started to set (though I didn’t even see it through the clouds but once all day). As the world became dark I suddenly just didn’t want to do anything ever again but hide under the covers and watch movies, or cry. Probably just cry.

What are doldrums?

The Doldrums (often capitalized when referring to the geographic region) is an area of the Atlantic Ocean, the Pacific Ocean and the Indian Ocean affected by the Intertropical Convergence Zone, a low-pressure area around the equator where the prevailing winds are calm.

This region is also noted for calm periods when the winds disappear altogether, or are light and shifting. Hurricanes originate in this region. Because of the unpredictable weather patterns, the Doldrums became notorious with sailors because this region’s periods of deadly calm could trap ships for days or weeks on end as they waited for enough wind to power their sails.

In colloquial usage, “being in the doldrums” refers to being in a state of listlessness, despondency, inactivity, stagnation, or a slump.

However, I was able to pull it together enough to make this mix. I included Solvent’s newest release- a remake of Lydia Lunch’s “Master Alchemist”. Quite twisted and nice. You can pick it up here. Check out Echoism Recordings on Myspace.

My other favorite is Arnaud Lazlaud’s “Le Malade Roi.” I swear I can listen to it again and again all day long. That song was released as a 7″ by Hertz-Schrittmacher, a sub-label of Kernkrach, last year and was produced by Xavier Paradis of Automelodi. It was originally made in the late nineties. You can get it through Annalogue Records or if you live in North America you can contact him directly to get a copy without shipping costs from Europe.

I discovered that ridiculously cute song “Master & Slave” by Puss recently. I just have this thing for self-referencing synthesizer music. I would like to do a show specifically made of synthesizer songs about synthesizers. Some day…

On with the mix! …

My sculpture “The City” is complete.

After plugging away on this piece for a year on and off it’s finally finished. It’s a three dimensional sculpture involving found objects, paper pulp and paper-mache, feathers, scrap metal, acrylic paint, resin and a bunch of other stuff! It’s a little tricky to photograph. I wish I was a photographer at times like this, but I did the best I could.

It’s called “The City” because it’s about my first year and a half living in Brooklyn. There have been so many facets to my experience here. This sculpture is a bit like a beveled stone that is the emotional roller-coaster of my life as of late. This only became clear long after I began the piece and could look at it objectively.

"The City" - Acrylic paint, feathers, paper-pulp, bird skull, rinestones, cut velum, found metal scrap, paper-mache, pen, marker, resin, human hair, velvet, wire. 23" x 25" x 7"

New illustrations for Rolling Thunder magazine and upcoming book Philip’s Story

Since last month I’ve been illustrating two of Carrot Quinn’s stories. “Madge and Pansy” is a fable of two friends in search of “a fantastical city, built entirely of stone mined from the hills of unreasonable expectations.” Its due to be published in the next issue of Rolling Thunder magazine. “Philip’s Story” is the tale of Philip Sockman the sock-monkey and her adventures. Both are tales for adults chock full of imagination, moral fiber and life lessons.

These three drawings are for “Madge and Pansy.” You can click the images to see a larger version.

And these are for “Philip’s Story.” I still have a couple more to upload and I need to complete three more to finish the project.

Electro-Magnetism: Episode 5 (totally)

azul-y-negro

The saga continues! After surviving the holiday insanity I am back on schedule with another installment of Electro-Magnetism.  This one is seriously all over the map.  After delving into the old Snow Robots comps from Suction Records I recently discovered the album “The View From Your New Home” by The Mitgang Audio from 2003. Not sure why it took me so long.  I also was just feeling in the mood for the epicness that is “Symphony Electrique”.  Some days are just like that.

And I apologize for some sub-par sound quality on some tracks. I noticed right towards the end of the set that the treble had been cut (due to a magic button I didn’t know existed) on one of the channels on the mixer. Woops on that shit.

Dance in yer pants and enjoy!
